West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Lays Foundation for Gangasagar Bridge Ahead of 2026 Mela!
Kolkata, Jan 5, 2026 — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone today for a long-awaited bridge project that aims to connect Sagar Island with the mainland over the Muriganga River. The nearly 5-kilometer, four-lane Gangasagar Setu — costing around ₹1,670 crore — is expected to provide all-weather road access to the island, where the annual Gangasagar Mela draws millions of pilgrims.
The ceremony was held as preparations intensify for the Gangasagar Mela 2026, scheduled around the Makar Sankranti holy dip and worship at the Kapil Muni temple. Currently, visitors rely mostly on ferry services to reach the island — a system that often creates bottlenecks due to tides, fog and heavy crowds during peak times.
Chief Minister Banerjee emphasized that the bridge will ease travel for pilgrims, tourists and local residents alike, reduce journey time, and boost socio-economic activity in the region. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded the construction contract, and officials say the project is expected to be completed in about two years.
The initiative also follows appeals by the state government for greater recognition and support for the Gangasagar Mela, which has become one of the country’s major religious gatherings. Ahead of the event, the administration is stepping up infrastructure, safety and logistical arrangements to handle a potentially record turnout.
